"You don't even know how long you'll be gone boss?"
" 'Fraid not, Jim. That's just the nature of family business. You always hope it will be over soon, but it always ends up taking weeks longer than you think it will," Dusty threw one last pair of jeans into his bag and zipped it up before throwing it over his shoulder. He almost never went away like this, though some of his older hands remember a time or two he was away for a week or so at a time, and he always gave the same reason: family business.
"Well, I gotta say, I don't quite like it, boss," Jim said, rubbing the back of his neck with his hand, "I mean, what if you're gone for a month and something big comes up?"
"Frankly, there's not a damn thing I can think of that you and the rest of the guys can't handle, Jim. And if you really start panicking, I don't carry a cell-phone for nothing." They continued their discussion as they walked from inside his house to the stables outside. "I'll try to keep the trip as short as possible, and I'll see if I can't get a little work done while I'm out there. Montana shouldn't be short of stock after all."
"I know I know…I guess it'll just be weird without you around. " Jim couldn't help but smile and shake his head a bit, watching his boss unconsciously dust off the shoulder of his vest. It was always weird how no matter what he had been doing that day, Dusty always lived up to his name, and found dust somewhere on his person.
"Eh, give it a week and you'll barely notice I'm gone," he replied with a smile, clapping Jim on the shoulder, good-naturedly. Reaching down he picked up the other case he had packed earlier, and then with one more round of goodbyes he headed off for the bus into Boston itself, to meet up with the rest of his new Motley.

Family business, that's what he always called it, and it was never really a lie in his eyes. The Four Corners Sanctuary freehold may have almost 300 residents at the moment, but however large, it was still unquestionably his family. And when his family asked for his help, this was one Sandharrowed that always answered the call. Though granted these were strange and ominous circumstances he was being called under this time. The missive came from his own Spring King, but the request itself came from the current Lord of the freehold, Autumn. Seemed some little town out in Montana has suffered some kind of unknown phenomena that warped the surrounding hedge almost out of recognition. There were no freeholds close by, and while there were other large freeholds closer, they had specifically sent for help from Boston. Undoubtedly because of their reputation for court cooperation, and because they were one of the largest and fastest growing freeholds in the country.
His King had explained that he had been chosen to represent spring in this emergency motley partially because his easy-going personality would probably be welcomed by the others in such a distorted place, and, naturally, because he currently wasn't a part of any other motley. With such a potentially dangerous situation, and such very good reasons, Dusty just had to say yes. So now he was off to meet up with his rather eclectic traveling companions, and just hoping he wouldn't be gone TOO long…
