David's first change occurred on a full moon when he came back from the Gulf War to find his wife and her lover waiting for him, with his luggage packed for him and divorce papers waiting to be signed.
He was taken in and shown the ropes by a pack of storm lords, who in addition to the normal lessons of new cubs, taught him to juggle life as a Uratha with caring for his 4 teenage sons.
He took the Oath of the Moon, as well as joining the Storm Lords tribe, but wasn't comfortable with the pack that took him in. He went his own way, and set up a freelance mercenary unit, specializing in hostage rescue. His sons, when they got old enough, put in their time serving their country, and came to work with Dad.
He stayed active in tribal affairs, and did his best to keep a handle on his local territory on his own, and with the help of his men. The men in his unit are all aware of his being Uratha, and he keeps them up to date on what he learns about things that may effect them. Spirit stuff, he figures, they probably don't need to know, normally.
David saw his men as an informal pack, but the other Uratha in the area were never willing to acknowledge it as such, and get on his case about not getting a proper pack, not living up to his responsibilities, so on and so forth.
Things came to a head when a visiting Uratha fell into Death Rage and killed his oldest son. David, when he learned what happened, challenged the Uratha, and killed him.
The elder Uratha condemned David for breaking the Oath of the Moon (the People shall not kill the People), and said that while the dead Uratha should have had better control then to fall into Death Rage, well, accidents happen.
David cut himself off from all contact with Uratha, and all involvement with his tribe. On the rare occasions when wandering Uratha visited his base, the whole place went into lock down.
A few years later, a pair of lone wolves stumbled into his territory accidentally, and ended up staying for a few weeks. Being unusual Uratha themselves, when David finally opened up enough to tell them why he was cut off from the other Uratha, they told him that they were impressed he controlled himself enough to issue a challenge, rather then falling into Death Rage himself.
The three of them became a pack, not without some minor problems (Amaya and Jack freely admitted neither of them was cut out to be alpha, but David's rank was lower then either of them . . . )
David was prepping for a mission to Panama when a spirit Amaya knew showed up to call in a favor owed. He, not without grumbling, passed control of the mission to his second, his son John, and the pack set off for Belleville.

Role Playing Sample
David was crouched in the weeds at the edge of the camp when his cell phone rang. He cursed - silently - as the skin and fur of his thigh vibrated.
The spirit powered cell phone Amaya came up with seemed like a great idea. Until it went off while he was in wolf form 10 meters from an enemy sentry.
He waited until the phone was done, and he could move normally again, before he backed off through the brush, and continued his recon.

He cursed out loud and for a long time after he listened to the message back at base.
Then he called John.
'Yes, sir,' John answered.
'John, I got good news and bad news.' His voice had a low growl to it, like always when he was upset, 'The pack needs to pull out ASAP, so you'll be taking charge of the op. I'll send you a full brief on what's happened while we're in flight. We might end up needing back up, so get this taken care of quick and clean, go it.'
'Yes, sir, hope that's not your good news. Pierre is still at home base, if you need back up before we get done here.'
'Pierre's got the family men running things while we're gone. I'm not calling them out unless I have no choice. I hate pulling out this much of the company for a single op.' The family men were part-timers who settled down with a spouse and kids. Last thing they needed was for him to drag them into this f***ed up mess.
'But, yes that's the bad news. Good news is, our source was wrong. It's leech running the place, not a mage. Go in a couple hours after sunrise and you should be fine.'
'Sounds good sir, good luck with what ever.'
David got off the phone and went to meet up with Amaya and Jack.
