"Well, this just goes to prove that it doesn't matter who you deal with. Humans or spirits, they all want something outta' ya in the end," Jack commented, leaning against the door frame while he watched his pack-mate, well, pack.
Amaya just rolled her eyes at his commentary. She knew him well enough to know that he couldn't help but play the peanut gallery. He earned is spirit name title of 'Irreverent' fair and square after all. Besides in his typically flippant way he was right, everyone DOES want something, a fact that any Ithaeur worth their salt should know well. Which was part of the reason that she just wasn't annoyed at this request by an old spirit ally to check out this corruption of the Shadow out West. "You know perfectly well that I'd want to go check this out even if I wasn't specifically asked. And don't pretend you're not curious either, Jack."
He just shrugged a bit, his near-constant grin still on his handsome face, "I never claimed anything of the kind. Strange goings on are always interesting. Besides, as wonderful as it is to have some permanent territory again, I was starting to miss the open road a bit."
She responded with a rather non-comital noise. They had gotten used to the traveling life before they met David and formed their current pack, but Amaya had been traveling for several already before Jack found her and joined in the wanderings, and while it was becoming a habit she still felt far more at peace with some real territory to look after. Not to mention the grounded feeling of having a real pack again. As much as she was able to keep her sanity on her own, she knew that her tribe's disapproval was for a reason.
And for all his flippancy, Jack felt the same way. Though they came from different areas of the country, both of them had looked on their old packs as their families, and their sudden and violent losses had struck them both deeply. It had taken them years of wandering to find David, and now that they had their new family, they couldn't help but think quietly to themselves that they weren't going to lose this one. Not this time.
Of course, as they walked out of her room to meet up with their alpha, all such contemplative thoughts quickly left her as Amaya spared a glare at Jack, who had started whistling a rather poor rendition of "On the Road Again."
